The Director General of Opomulero Group, Hon. Olasupo Olakunori, has described the recent statement by Accord Party House of Assembly candidate, Amb. Abiola Obanoyen (Adidas), on the Akure Flyover Project as another attempt to politicize a landmark developmental initiative that enjoys widespread support from the people of Ondo State.
While every opposition party has a right to express its views, it is intellectually dishonest to suggest that government must choose between infrastructure, security, youth empowerment, and economic development. Responsible governance is not about selecting one and abandoning the others; it is about pursuing all of them simultaneously for the benefit of the people.
It is surprising that those who claim not to oppose development have dedicated several paragraphs to attacking one of the most significant infrastructural projects ever undertaken in the state capital. The Akure Flyover is not an “elephant project” as suggested by the Accord Party. It is a strategic investment designed to address traffic challenges, improve urban mobility, attract investment, and stimulate economic growth for decades to come.
On the issue of security, the Aiyedatiwa administration has consistently demonstrated commitment to the protection of lives and property through sustained support for security agencies, Amotekun Corps, and other security initiatives across the state. Security remains a continuous responsibility, and no serious government abandons infrastructural development simply because security challenges exist.
Likewise, the claim that government is neglecting youth empowerment ignores the numerous interventions already being implemented across Ondo State. The administration has continued to support youth development, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and small business growth while also investing in critical infrastructure. Development is not an either-or proposition.
What is most ironic, however, is that those questioning the state’s capacity to execute a 2.5-kilometre flyover are the same individuals who have never managed projects of comparable scale, complexity, or public importance. Major infrastructure projects are executed based on engineering designs, professional supervision, budgetary provisions, and contractual obligations—not political pessimism.
The attempt to compare a median divider with a major flyover project is not a serious engineering argument but a political talking point designed to generate headlines. Ondo people are intelligent enough to distinguish between constructive criticism and opposition for opposition’s sake.
If Amb. Obanoyen truly believes in skills acquisition, cooperative funding, and youth empowerment, those ideas should complement infrastructural development rather than be presented as alternatives to it. A modern economy requires good roads, security, education, skilled manpower, access to finance, healthcare, and investment. No responsible government should neglect any of these sectors.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s administration has shown that it possesses both the vision and the courage to develop Ondo State comprehensively. The Akure Flyover stands as evidence of that vision.
Rather than praying for failure or predicting abandonment, well-meaning stakeholders should support projects that will benefit present and future generations of Ondo State citizens.
The people of Ondo State deserve constructive engagement, not cynical politics disguised as public policy.
