This statement emanates from the Opomulero Group meeting held yesterday, where the Director General, Hon. Olasupo Olakunori Michael, addressed leaders of the movement across the state, reaffirming total support for the re-election of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
Addressing Opomulero leaders statewide, the DG emphasized that Governor Aiyedatiwa has not only demonstrated capacity in governance but also remains constitutionally qualified to seek re-election without any legal encumbrance.
Clear Constitutional Backing
According to the DG, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly provides for a maximum of two full terms for a governor. However, constitutional interpretation recognizes that where a deputy governor assumes office mid-term, such tenure may not count as a full term.
Governor Aiyedatiwa assumed office following the demise of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu, in December 2023, and the period he is completing is less than two years.
Judicial Precedent
The DG further noted that the Supreme Court position, as seen in the case involving Goodluck Jonathan, clearly establishes that a tenure of less than two years does not amount to a full term.
Therefore, Governor Aiyedatiwa remains fully eligible to contest and serve a fresh mandate.
Performance That Justifies Continuity
Hon. Olakunori highlighted that beyond legality, Governor Aiyedatiwa has earned the trust of the people through:
Sustained infrastructure development across the state
Improved welfare for workers and pensioners
Strategic youth empowerment and job creation initiatives
Strengthened security architecture and inclusive governance
He stressed that Ondo State is witnessing steady progress under the current administration, which must not be disrupted.
Call for Unity and Support
The DG charged all Opomulero leaders across the 18 local government areas to remain united, mobilize grassroots support, and continue to enlighten the public on both the achievements and the clear legal standing of the Governor.
There is no ambiguity about his eligibility. The law is clear, and his performance is visible. What is required now is unity of purpose to ensure continuity and consolidation of development in Ondo State, he stated.
The Opomulero Group therefore reaffirms its unwavering support for Governor Aiyedatiwa and calls on all well-meaning citizens to rally behind his re-election bid.
