In every functional democracy, political parties operate within the framework of their constitutions, which clearly recognize consensus as a legitimate and strategic method for candidate selection. When adopted with broad stakeholder engagement, consensus reduces internal conflict, conserves resources, and strengthens party unity ahead of elections.
Under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has consistently upheld consensus as a symbol of political maturity and disciplined leadership. In Lagos, the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the state APC structure have repeatedly adopted consensus arrangements—widely praised as orderly, strategic, and exemplary.
Similarly, APC structures in Ogun State, Ekiti State, Oyo State, and Osun State have successfully utilized consensus as a pragmatic tool for stability and cohesion within the party.
It is therefore both inconsistent and unfair for anyone to celebrate consensus in these states, yet question or condemn the same process in Ondo State.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and the Ondo APC leadership have acted strictly within the provisions of the party’s constitution by adopting consensus for the selection of candidates across Senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats. This decision reflects leadership foresight, commitment to unity, and alignment with established party practices across the federation.
Consensus cannot be right in one state and wrong in another under the same constitutional framework. Such double standards amount to political inconsistency and, indeed, hypocrisy.
If consensus has been applauded in Lagos and other APC-controlled states, then fairness, integrity, and political sincerity demand that the same recognition be extended to Ondo State.
The Directorate of the Opomulero Movement therefore calls on all party faithful, stakeholders, and observers to uphold consistency, respect due process, and support the leadership of Governor Aiyedatiwa in fostering unity and strengthening the APC ahead of future electoral engagements.
Let us stand firmly on principles, not convenience; on consistency, not sentiment; and on party unity, above all else.
