The announcement by the Ondo State Government to provide free Caesarean sections and pregnancy kits for expectant mothers is one of the clearest demonstrations yet that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa understands what governance is truly about: saving lives, reducing hardship and putting the people first.

As the Director-General of Opomulero Group/Movement, I commend Governor Aiyedatiwa for this compassionate and courageous intervention. At a time when many families are struggling with the rising cost of living, removing the financial burden associated with medically necessary Caesarean delivery can mean the difference between despair and hope, between tragedy and survival.

A government should not only be judged by the number of projects it commissions but by the number of lives its policies touch and protect.

What Governor Aiyedatiwa is doing in the health sector speaks directly to ordinary families. For a pregnant woman whose doctors determine that Caesarean delivery is necessary, the first concern should be her health and the survival of her baby—not whether her husband can raise hundreds of thousands of naira before she receives treatment.

That is why this policy deserves commendation.

This is not politics. This is humanity. This is governance with a human face.

The pregnancy kits are equally important because the intervention begins before delivery. Supporting expectant mothers through pregnancy encourages proper preparation and strengthens maternal healthcare from antenatal care to childbirth.

Governor Aiyedatiwa is therefore not simply announcing another government programme. He is removing a major barrier between vulnerable families and essential healthcare.

This is what the EASE Agenda should mean in practical terms.

Ease of Living is not an abstract slogan when a pregnant woman can walk into a public health facility with greater confidence that she will receive necessary care without her family being pushed into unbearable financial hardship.

And let us be honest: when complications arise during childbirth, time is critical. A family should not be running from one person to another looking for emergency funds while a mother and child are waiting for medical intervention.

Every mother saved is a family preserved. Every newborn protected is an investment in Ondo State’s future.

Governor Aiyedatiwa deserves credit for recognising this reality and acting accordingly.

I have always maintained that leadership should be measured by its impact on the ordinary citizen. Roads are important. Infrastructure is important. Investment is important. But at the end of the day, government exists to protect and improve human lives.

The Aiyedatiwa administration is demonstrating that understanding through interventions across different sectors, and this latest healthcare initiative further reinforces the point that the people remain at the centre of his administration.

Those who reduce every government policy to politics are missing the bigger picture. There will always be political disagreements, but maternal and child health should transcend partisan interests.

Nobody should politicise a policy designed to save a mother.

Nobody should make the survival of a newborn a subject of political rivalry.

Rather, every responsible stakeholder should encourage the government to sustain and expand interventions that make quality healthcare more accessible to the people.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has shown that compassionate governance is possible even in difficult economic circumstances.
