The Director General of Opomulero, Hon. Olasupo Olakunori, has assured the good people of Ondo State that the government under the leadership of Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is taking decisive steps to curb the recent security challenges facing parts of the state.
According to the DG, the governor remains fully committed to protecting lives and property and has already rolled out proactive measures that will significantly reduce criminal activities, especially kidnapping, within a short period of time.
Hon. Olakunori therefore charged security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the Ondo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun Corps), to remain alert and alive to their constitutional responsibilities in safeguarding the people.
He also called on residents of Ondo State to cooperate fully with the government and comply with the new security directives introduced by the state government.
Government Security Directives
- Ban on Late-Night Motorcycle Operations
The Ondo State Government has placed an embargo on late-night motorcycle (Okada) operations across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.
The restriction takes effect from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am daily until further notice, as intelligence reports reveal that kidnappers often use motorcycles to carry out their operations.
The ban applies to all motorcycle operators—both commercial and private, except those on essential or security duties.
- Mandatory Registration of Motorcycle Riders
The government has directed that all motorcycle riders must register with the Amotekun Corps and obtain the necessary certification to operate legally within the state.
Operators have two weeks to complete the registration free of charge.
After this period, defaulters will be required to pay ₦20,000 to the State Board of Internal Revenue to regularize their operations.
Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that:
This is to allow security agencies to easily identify legitimate operators and isolate those who may be using motorcycles for criminal purposes.
- Ban on Cart-Pushing and Scrap Metal Activities
The state government has also announced a ban on cart-pushing activities, particularly those involving iron condemn and metal waste scavengers, in major metropolitan areas across the state.
In addition, all dealers in condemned iron and scrap metals must register with the appropriate authorities within two weeks or face enforcement actions.
- Restriction on Roadside Display of Farm Produce
The government has further prohibited the display and sale of farm produce at unauthorized roadside locations, especially at junctions and makeshift stalls.
Security intelligence indicates that some of these locations are being used as monitoring posts by criminal elements within the metropolis.
Speaking on the development, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps,
Adetunji Adeleye, noted:
If you look around the town, you will see people displaying tomatoes, fruits, onions, and other items at junctions. Intelligence reports have shown that some of these places are being used as monitoring points for criminal activities within the metropolis.
Call for Public Cooperation
Hon. Olasupo Olakunori urged residents not to panic but to support the government’s efforts by obeying the directives and reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.
He emphasized that security is a collective responsibility, adding that the people of Ondo State should remain vigilant while the government continues to strengthen strategies aimed at restoring lasting peace and safety across the state.
