The Director General of Opomulero Group, Hon. Olasupo Olakunori, has applauded the Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for approving the canalization and re-channelization of the Ugbonla-Awoye Waterway, describing the intervention as a historic and people-oriented decision that will bring lasting relief to the riverine communities of Ilaje Local Government Area.

According to DG Opomulero, the approval demonstrates Governor Aiyedatiwa’s deep understanding of the environmental and economic challenges confronting the coastal communities and his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the people.

“For years, our riverine communities have suffered the devastating effects of siltation, restricted navigation, flooding, environmental degradation, and threats to lives and property. The canalization of the Ugbonla-Awoye Waterway is therefore not just an infrastructural project; it is a lifeline for thousands of residents whose daily survival depends on safe and accessible waterways.”

Hon. Olakunori noted that the project will significantly improve transportation, facilitate economic activities, enhance fishing and trading operations, reduce flooding, and create opportunities for agricultural development through land reclamation.

He further stated that the intervention will support ongoing efforts to address the menace of coastal erosion and sea incursion that have continued to threaten several communities in the Ilaje axis.

“The Governor has once again demonstrated that governance is about responding to the genuine needs of the people. This approval will not only improve navigation but also stimulate economic growth and environmental sustainability across the coastal region.”

DG Opomulero also commended stakeholders, community leaders, professionals, and advocates who have consistently drawn attention to the plight of the affected communities and advocated practical solutions to the environmental challenges facing the area.

He urged residents of the affected communities to continue supporting the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, assuring them that more developmental interventions would reach every part of Ondo State under the Governor’s purposeful leadership.
